Steve Bannon on a fascist future for the US

An extensive interview of Steven Bannon by the Economist … Christian nationalism, 3rd term for Trump, “he’s the person who can save America”. These are determined people aiming at fundamentally destroying our constitutional democracy. Trump is an “instrument of divine will”. Absolutely chilling defense of Trump as permanent dictator …

Thanks, Dan. Terrifying, and we really need more people to be paying attention. This video is excerpted from a longer interview, but I am struck by the fact that Bannon almost nowhere says what the so-called MAGA revolution is actually about. Yes, he owns the nationalist label, and there are fleeting mentions of deportations toward the end. But he has thoroughly mastered the idiom of vague jingoism and appeals to “empowering” ordinary citizens in a new “non-corporatist” capitalism — all of which is under threat by “them.”

  2. That’s a really good point, Gary! It falls closer to the kind of “content-less” populism that Cas Mudde describes … designed to appeal to amorphous resentment of “elites” and “others” while disguising the underlying political program and values.
